Professor Edwin Kirk

Professor Edwin Kirk is a clinical geneticist, genetic pathologist and researcher. As a clinician, Kirk works with children and families affected by genetic conditions. In the laboratory, he is responsible for analysing and reporting genetic tests, the results of which are often profoundly important to the people who have been tested. As a researcher, he studies the causes of congenital heart disease and severe childhood-onset epilepsy, among other conditions. He is one of the three scientific leads for the Australian Government funded Mackenzie’s Mission, a $20 million project which aims to study reproductive carrier screening. In more than 20 years of working with children and families affected by genetic disease, Kirk has developed a rare perspective on the impact this important and fascinating area of science can have on people: patients, their doctors, and the researchers whose work has the power to bring them together.
